OUR STORY

In 2014, Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep (one of the high schools within the diocese) and Kalamazoo Christian High School joined forces to create the Kalamazoo “United” football team. At the time, both schools were having difficulties fielding enough players to safely play football games. The unity of these two rival teams and their student-athletes set into motion and created a great example for all about what it means to be United in Christ.

Football unity was just the beginning of the cooperation between the Catholics and Protestants in Southwest Michigan. Last year, a celebration was held in recognition of the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation. The Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo, along with many local Protestant churches held a community wide event honoring, “One Lord – One Faith – One Church” under “Kalamazoo United”.

To further the spirit of Kalamazoo United and assist in evangelizing and bringing people closer to Christ, we are continuing to work together and are now moving toward a joint fund raising event to promote Christian (Catholic and Protestant) education opportunities. We look to highlight the basic principles of being a positive, impactful citizen through strong faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, by making good decisions and living a productive life to the best of each one’s abilities.

Our goal is two-fold for this event.  To make people aware of the strong educational and faith-filled communities that are thriving around them and to provide the resources for us to further assist all of the schools (Catholic and Protestant) in being beacons of light while bringing students and families closer to God.

Jesus said, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Mt 28:19). Today’s Catholic schools are the current bearers of a long and rich tradition that can be traced right back to the early centuries of the Church’s existence. That tradition, the teaching mission of the church, comes from Christ Himself. Catholic education remains critically important in the formation of the human person by teaching how to live well now so as to be able to live with God for all eternity.

The Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo spans 9 counties in southwest Michigan and has 21 Catholic schools educating students in Preschool – Grade 12 in mind, body and spirit. Our schools serve both the faith community and society by educating children to contribute to the common good by becoming active and caring members of the communities, cities, and nation in which they live. Each of our 21 schools is dynamic and distinctive in their own way. They vary in size and are located in both urban and rural areas, but all share the same goal: to prepare students to live lives devoted to Christ through distinctive and dynamic academic experiences and service opportunities.

We are appreciative of Kalamazoo Christian Schools for inviting us to partner in ‘United in Purpose’ featuring Lou Holtz. This opportunity allows us to promote faith-based education to a broader community and highlight living a life rooted in scripture. Proceeds from this event will be used to further support Catholic education in our diocese by providing tuition assistance to families who are seeking a Catholic education for their child.

The Kalamazoo Christian Schools were founded in 1877 with a vision of preparing young men and women to advance God's Kingdom, both locally and globally. With two campuses in Kalamazoo and more than 800 students P-12, the schools have maintained a strong reputation for academic excellence, faith-based learning, and educational opportunities both in and out of the traditional classroom setting.

We seek to develop our students spiritually, morally, socially, and physically through a well-rounded curriculum combined with a variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Among the highlights in our academically strong schools are a Spanish Immersion program, several Advanced Placement courses, award-winning band and choir programs, technology education at all grade levels, excellent science facilities and an industrial arts programs, and a wide variety of athletic offerings.

God has been faithful to the Kalamazoo Christian Schools for over 140 years. As we focus on being good stewards of the resources He's blessed us with, the time has come to look ahead to the next generation of our schools. We are so grateful to see God's work in the life of our staff, students, and families. We ask you to join us for the 'Kalamazoo United in Purpose' event with our friends from the Catholic Diocese to raise funds for our schools, in that we may make Kalamazoo Christian Schools affordable for more families in Kalamazoo.
